Top snooker talent on cue in Wales

Welsh sports fans are in for a treat as world-class snooker players prepare to take part in the Texaco Charity Snooker Challenge at Folly Farm, near Tenby, South Wales from 27 - 29 May 2006.

The aim of the event is to raise funds for the children’s charity, NCH, which works with 140,000 of the UK’s most vulnerable children, young people and their families. Texaco has supported the organisation for over 15 years and is nearing the £1 million milestone.

Six-times world champion Steve Davis* OBE will be joined by leading snooker players including Welsh champion Matthew Stevens, former world champion John Parrot MBE, Irish champion Joe Swail and Dominic Dale.  The Challenge will be presented by player and commentator, Willie Thorne.

Players will compete in a timed round-robin of matches allowing the audience to see all five star players perform in each night of the tournament and competitors will also play potential star players of tomorrow in an exhibition format.

“Over the years we’ve held a variety of different events to raise funds for NCH,” said Phil Thompson, Public Affairs Adviser at Texaco’s Pembroke refinery. “It would be great to be able to break through the £1 million barrier and we hope that snooker lovers and charitable supporters alike will come along and give their support.”

Situated in the heart of Pembrokeshire, Folly Farm is one of the largest family attractions in Wales and offers a host of fun activities.  Contestants at the Challenge will compete in the 700-seat theatre within the venue.

Phil continued: “The Snooker Challenge offers the local community an opportunity to watch professional sportsmen on their doorstep.  This year, we have once again attracted a first-class line up and there is a real buzz of expectation as the tournament draws near.”

Over the years, fans have enjoyed watching the skills of seven World Champions, including Steve Davis, Welshman Terry Griffiths, John Parrott, Jimmy White, Peter Ebdon, Joe Johnson and two Ladies World Champions – Alison Fisher and Karen Corr, both now successfully playing pool in the USA.

Doors open at 6pm each evening. If you would like to buy tickets for the event, call the booking hotline on 01834 812731. For further information and directions to get to Folly Farm, visit:  www.folly-farm.co.uk/contact.asp
